QATAR Prix de l'ARC DE TRIOMPHE

JOHN GOSDEN: “A MAJESTUOUS QUEEN” – at Chantilly in 2017

Sunday 01 October 2017 - LONGCHAMP - Gr1

00124623-245-scoopdyga Report Video Result Pedigree Prize winner

“It was very satisfying to win the last Arc held in the hold Longchamp for the last year. You had already all gone to the parade ring. And I followed you, thinking about all these big champions who walked the same path along these impressive stands to go back to parade ring…” It is what John Gosden explained recently in the series “This is my Arc” developed by France Galop, when remembering the success of Golden Horn (Cape Cross). The british trainer wins, two years later, the second and last Arc ran in Chantilly. And if Enable did not canter on the same track as the big Arc winners, she walked in their steps metaphorically. Because what she did in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is one of the greatest.

A marvellous filly. Gods knew it: Enable won the Epsom Oaks when lightning lit up the skies. On that day, she revealed herself to the whole world: sparks of pure class. It was the start of the exploit: the Epsom Oask, then the Irish Oaks, then the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, then the Yorkshire Oaks… and then the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Never seen before. Five Grs1 in five months, with a cumulated margin of twenty-three lengths and a half!

John Gosden did a real sterling work on this jewel filly. Frankie Dettori and him managed to understand and shape her: this talent shined brightly at Chantilly. The trainer said: “What a marvellous 3 year old filly! She is very special. She was well positioned by Frankie in the race. Listen, this is all about the filly, and her owner and breeder, Prince Khalid Abdullah.”

A well thought strategy. Enable was the hot favourite in this Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Chantilly is a racecourse with its own traps, that John Gosden highlighted

This week in the British media. But the trainer likes to walk! The ones who have tried to follow him on a racecourse know you need to breathe well. Like for the Arc of Golden Horn, John Gosden and Frankie Dettori walked the track of the Arc, in order to put in place a winning strategy. The trained explained: “I go to all racecourses in Europe and it is good to walk! I met Frankie at the 2,400m post and we walked the track. It is an interesting puzzle. The idea was to be in the leading group. Frankie started well and then two Coolmore horses came up beside them. He held up Enable so that she would not be stuck along the rail. Frankie and the filly found themselves in a perfect position to win. He was a bit eccentric with Golden Horn and today, he was perfect. Nothing is worth experience and truste.”

The Breeders’ Cup? No! The enthusiasm is such that, obviously, we would like to see Enable again. She showed a lot but seems capable of pushing limits even further. The only option this year for Enable, real 2,400m filly, would be the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr1), which Golden Horn ran after his victory in Longchamp. This is a less potential option: “It would be wrong too run her again this year, she’s been running for ten months and it would be too hard on the filly to go to the Breeder’s Cup. If she’s really in good form, we will still consider running her next year, and maybe come back to the new ParisLongchamp.”

Teddy Grimthorpe: “She stands among the greatest”

This Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is also a triumph for Juddmonte Farms, prince Khalid Abdullah’s entity. His silks shine for the fifth time in the Arc, after Rainbow Quest, Dancing Brave – long considered like one of the greatest horses of all times in the international ratings before being replaced by Frankel -, Rail Link and Workforce… Prince Khalid Abdullah’s colours are one success far from the owners’ record in this Gr1, held by Marcel Boussac.

Of another world. A few minutes after Enable’s win, in the ring, Teddy Grimthorpe was still filled with emotion. He answered our questions. Like John Gosden, they both qualified Enable as a queen. He told us: “She did something of another world, really. It is the crowning of a queen. She progressed all year long to do an absolutely outstanding performance on Sunday. She won five Grs1 in a row and all with such a gap in the finish. She is different. I think she is probably the best 3yo in the world today. With today’s performance, she stands among the greatest. I was confident. The gate number was good and Frankie gave her a beautiful ride.”

Enable, save the date for 2018? Journalists are sometimes impatient, like the public. The question was on everyone’s lips and it was asked: Will we see Enable back in 2018? We know prince Khalid Abdullah is a great sportsman: he kept in training champions who did not have anything else to prove, like in recent years, horses like Frankel, or in the females, like Midday. Teddy Grimthorpe still does not have an answer to this question: “There aren’t any plans for the moment, we will first take pleasure out of this moment! We will see later how the filly is and will talk with the Prince…” We know going from 3 to 4 can sometimes be tough with fillies. But enable seems to have a wonderful temperament. Calm, confident, serenity… All the assets of a queen that can still reign for a while.

Best 3yo in the world… best horse in the world? With this success, Enable shows well that she is currently the best 3yo in the world, male and female together, all countries, distances and grounds. She is not the best horse in the world according the Longines International Ratings, still being defeated by Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) – a Juddmonte representative! – and by Winx (Street Cry), the Australian queen. Difficult to compare these three hoses and Teddy Grimthorpe is right when he says: “We can’t compare our friends!” One thing is sure: Enable stands high.

The Special One and the Special Five

By Franco Raimondi

Enable, the Special One, and Lanfranco Dettori, the Special Five, won the last Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Chantilly. The Special One with two legs, the famous Jose Mourinho, is quietly sitting at his place on the bench of Manchester United and he is the master of communication. The Special Five, Lanfranco Dettori, learnt to communicate well with the public and the media and he copy paste a declaration of Mourinho to answer my question: “Were you scared of being trapped by a strategy prepared by Aidan O’Brien?” “Non sono mica un pirla [I am not stupid, in english]! I learnt a few things after riding twenty-eight times in the Arc de Triomphe… I knew that Idaho and Order of St George would play that role, going in front. It was a plan we had prepared with John Gosden before the race. I was even ready to go in front. I did not want to stay stuck. So, I held up a little, Order of St George passed by and I followed him.”

A dreamt position. Lanfranco Dettori added: “I even had a doubt: did I really win my fifth Arc de Triomphe with the best filly I have ever ridden in my career? Everything went well in the race that I had the impression of dreaming for two minutes and a half. I was very confident before the race, I knew I’d win, but not after such a perfect and easy race.”

Lanfranco had only a small issue in the turn, when Enable was not well in her strides for a second. He let her go at her ease and the Special One thanked him in her own way. Frankie explained: “Chantilly’s turn is not so easy for a filly with such a big action like Enable, but she rebalanced herself quickly. I waited for the 400m post to press the button. She then placed her turn of foot, took the advantage and continued pleasantly. Everything is easy for Enable.”

The easiest Arc. The jockey from Milan has no doubts, the Arc is the easiest of his victories: “I know that in the Arc de Triomphe anything can happen, and that the race is not won before the post, but this time I had shivers. I even thought that a cattivo [baddy in english] could come and steal our victory… No, nobody could catch up with Enable today. I was a stowaway in the last 200 metres, I could see the post getting closer and closer and Enable who did not let go.”

The best of his career. Enable is Lanfranco’s Sepcial One, the best filly of his long career and maybe best horse: “Over 2,400m, that’s sure. I never rode a horse like her. Enable has this quality to make things easy out of difficult things. What she did in the Arc is fabulous and, she had had a full season. That’s why we must congratulate John Gosden and his whole team.”

ParisLongchamp for the Special Six… The Special One would well transform the Special Fice into Special Six… She only needs to stay in training and on four legs for the 2018 edition of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and that another Enable does not appear… Lanfranco Dettori will be 47yos for the first Arc at ParisLongchamp and will be even better than at 46. “The record of five wins in the Arc de Triomphe is very special but I can’t dormire all’umido [in slang: rest on my laurels] because my friend Olivier Peslier promised to reach five as well…” Winning with Enable was easier than giving twelve interviews in different languages. Even in Milanese. Dettori, the Special Five, non è mica un pirla…

Enable & Frankel, not possible. The only sure thing about Enable’s future, when her owner and breeder Khalid Abdullah – thank you very much for giving us another champion –, will decide of the name of her first husband, is that she won’t meet Frankel. The result would be an inbreed 2 X 2 over Galileo, Frankel’s sire and also Nathaniel’s, who gave a champion as from his first crop. Only Marcel Boussac would have dared to that point… Enable, moreover, is already the product of an inbreed 3 X 2 over Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer), an extreme formula for all pedigree experts. When looking at the choices between the Juddmonte stallions and future stallions, we come down to two fascinating results: Arrogate & Enable or Kingman & Enable. We can dream with… For the moment, Enable has a little sister foal by Frankel, whereas her 2yo brother and her yearling sister are by Dansili (Danehill). In 2018, is expected a Sea the Stars (Cape Cross) filly/colt.

Cloth of Stars only beaten by an alien.

Cloth of Stars (Sea the Stars) is not the fastest horse to jump out and his connections could be frightened by the fact that a bad start would cost them a good place in this Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr1). But the Godolphin colt did a very good performance by taking the second place after running a home straight which he only has the secret. Well out, he was quickly surrounded by his rivals and found himself in the middle of the field. Running for home, he did not find an opening directly, finding himself stuck behind Ulysses (Galileo). Then, 300m from the post, his jockey Mickaël Barzalona, found an opening between Ulysses and the German Dschingis Secret (Soldier Hollow). He then produced a long acceleration to take the advantage in front of Ulysses, quite far from the champion Enable (Nathaniel). Six-time Group winner, including the Prix Ganay (Gr1), and second of the Arc: Cloth of Stars is really a dream horse. Godolphin representative, owner of Cloth of Stars, Lisa-Jane Graffard, told us: “Cloth of Stars ran a superb race. Even if he had found a way through earlier, he couldn’t have beaten the winner. He finished very well. He’s a really lovely horse, who has a lot of character but also a lot of quality. We will have to have a good think about his future. It is a possibility that he will have a break to then run in the Dubai Sheema Classic.”

Ulysses, a podium before the United States

After travelling in the middle of the field, Ulysses could not follow the winner in her acceleration. He briefly fought for the second place with Cloth of Stars. But the latter had more resources and the Niarchos family representative finally finishes third, at a bit more than a length. Sir Michael Stoute, his trainer, told us: “He has given a very good performance, but he is much better on good ground. It’s enough just to watch his action. That notwithstanding, the filly is too good for him. We will think about whether to go to America for the Breeder’s Cup, as he will have the ground he likes there. We will make a decision depending on how he comes back from this race.”

In 2016, he came fourth of the Longines Breeder’s Cup Turf. Before the Arc, he had just left a nice impression in the Juddmonte International Stakes, on a soft ground. Ulysses came second of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr1) won by Enable, on a very soft ground. Alan Cooper, who manages the racing interests for the Niarchos family, told us: “He really is a super horse. He has run very well and he never lets us down. Ulysses was raised at Coolmore. He comes from the same family as Cloth of Stars. This bloodline goes back to Northern Trick, the third dam, who was second in the Arc in 1984. She was bought as a yearling by Mr Niarchos, with François Boutin and Sir Philip Payne-Gallwey, my predecessor.”

Order of St George, as a tough horse

Third in 2016, Order of St George (Galileo), took the fourth place of this Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Best stayer in Europe, The Coolmore associates’ and Lloyd Williams’ horse stayed on a morning stroll in the Irish St Leger (Gr1) and decided not to go to the Melbourne Cup (Gr1) in order to take part in the Arc. Cantering amongst the first ones, the Aidan O’Brien trained horse came up along the rail in the finale phase. Mathieu Legars, Coolmore representative, told us: “We are happy with what he did. He has a huge heart and showed it again today. He is a real stayer, he is once and again present and did a godo race. Enable is a real champion.” He made his trainer, Aidan O’Brien say: “I am delighted with the way he has run. He likes the soft ground and he stays very well. Overall we are very pleased with him and my other horses in the race.”

The Irish trainer had signed a great success in the 2016 edition with

L’entraîneur irlandais avait fait carton plein dans l’édition 2016 Found (Galileo), Highland Reel (Galileo) and Order of St George. This year, he also counted on Idaho (Galileo), 8th, Winter (Galileo), 9th, Seventh Heaven (Galileo), 14th and Capri (Galileo), 17th.

Brametot is back

Brametot took a real good start and found himself quickly along the inside rail, in the back of Idaho (Galileo). When asked to accelerate, in the middle of the straight, he was not totally at ease, being stuck by Idaho. The Al Shaqab Racing owned colt had to be pulled out 200m from the post. He held his effort until the end to take a nice fifth place. Rupert Pritchard-Gordon, manager of Al Shaqab Racing said: “Brametot ran very well. We were hoping for this result. All the team felt that he had been much better since Deauville. He has run back to his true form. We have no excuses. At the most, he wasn’t that comfortable mid-way down the straight. Although that gave him a chance to breathe. It’s great to see him finish so well. We have come a long way from Deauville… He’s run back to his Jockey Club form. Concerning Doha Dream, he didn’t have as good an action as normal, and we will have to discuss where he will go next.Cristian Demuro added: “There wasn’t much pace and Brametot is better when he can come from behind. At the 400 metres post, he wasn’t really hampered, as he ran on well after.” Brametot stayed on a fifth place, for his seasonal debut, in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano – Haras du Logis Saint-Germain (Gr2). A race, too bad to be true and the Abu Dhabi Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Qipco Prix du Jockey Club (Grs1) winner show is real value today.
