Deep Sea vs SD4000 update... |
Fri, 17 July 2015 12:07 |
Now that I've owned the SD4000 for a week, I have some initial impressions.
First, a little background. I've been wearing a Deep Sea for the last 7 years or so and honestly didn't think I'd want or even consider a "lesser" diver from Rolex. I previously owned a no date Sub and that was my main piece until I acquired the Deep Sea; I gifted the no date to my stepson almost two years ago. I'll tie these two pieces in as I ramble on, so be patient with me!
We can skip by some of the usual stuff. We know it's well made, solid, keeps excellent time, etc, etc. I was more concerned about the downsizing aspect and would I be disappointed in the size and wrist presence because the Deep Sea is definitely not lacking there. Still, there were times when the Deep Sea did seem like it was a bit too oversized and that the bracelet was not correctly proportioned to the watch. After reading and participating in the Deep Sea vs SD4000 thread a couple of weeks ago, I rethought the possibility of purchasing an SD4000 and owning both watches to see which one really suited me best. Serendipitously one appeared on showcase that caught my attention and here we are.
In size, balance and proportion taken as a whole, the SD4000 is the clear winner in my mind. On the other hand the Deep Sea has that "it" factor that's hard to ignore. It doesn't blend in or disappear on your wrist or sit quietly under your shirt cuff; usually it won't even fit under a shirt cuff. The SD4000 goes about its business quietly and the Deep Sea lets you know it's there. So, while they may have many similarities these really are two completely different pieces and they can coexist. In car terms it's like owning a Corvette and a BMW sedan (feel free to substitute your favorites here). Each one will get you to the supermarket but your mood comes into play.
I was concerned the 40 mm size would seem too small but the watch is substantial and felt just right from the moment I put it on. The bracelet is proportional to the watch though I definitely prefer the guide lock arrangement on the Deep Sea for micro sizing and I wish the SD4000 had that as well. I have a 7" wrist for reference. I prefer the narrower lugs of the SD4000 over those on the new Subs and, honestly, the look reminds me of my departed no date Sub especially since there is no cyclops so the date window almost disappears. I wore my no date sub almost exclusively for years before my real watch addiction set in and I love the look as much today as the day I bought it so the SD4000 feels like an updated version with a much better bracelet and bezel. It's like meeting up with a girl you used to date and realizing she looks better than ever. It looks like a long term relationship could develop here.
So...which one do I prefer? Right now I like both but if I HAD to choose, it looks like the SD4000 by a nose.
