22 March 1988: Malta 1-1 Scotland


An embarrassing result for Andy Roxburgh’s side in Valletta. Graeme Sharp had put the Scots 1-0 up after 21 minutes in the first ever meeting between the two countries, but a team featuring the likes of Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish, Willie Miller and Ally McCoist conceded to Carmel Busuttil in the second half to mark the only occasion the Scots have ever failed to come out on top in this fixture.

28 May 1990: Malta 1-2 Scotland


The next meeting at the Ta’Qali Stadium set Scotland off on a run of five straight victories, with a double from Alan McInally either side of Michael Degiogrio’s strike securing the win.

The first competitive meeting between Scotland and Malta - and the only meeting on Scottish soil to date - resulted in a comfortable win. Two goals from Ally McCoist and Pat Nevin’s close range strike gave Scotland an important win at Ibrox.

A superb opener from Billy McKinlay set Scotland on their way to victory before three points were confirmed when Colin Hendry doubled their lead after heading in Gary McAllister’s free-kick.

But despite the two wins against Malta, Scotland’s quest to reach the 1994 finals was ultimately unsuccessful as they finished behind Italy, Switzerland and Portugal in their qualifying group.

Another friendly in Valletta produced a surprisingly closely fought affair between the number 123 and 29 ranked teams in the world. Scotland twice went ahead before being pegged back again, with Christian Dailly and Darren Jackson scoring. With nine minutes to go, Jackson got his second of the night to keep the winning run going.
