Day 153 (Sun) - 13th Day Post 4th 'A' Cycle, 7th Cycle total

Merry Christmas!!!

Emily came in at 5am (Chris was in with John, as he had come in our room around 3pm, and she went to his bed with him). She was excited as Santa had come and left a small present by her bedside, and the reindeer had made a mess with the cheerios, tracking them into her room and John's! Chris was vacuuming that up later....

I told her she had to wait until at least 6am! She got into bed with me. I think she just watched the clock, because at 6am she was up again, ready to go. I sent her to Chris to see if it was good enough (I used to get up even earlier I think). Chris said 7am, as the kids had been up late the night b4. So, at 7am, it was up again, and downstairs to check out the goods! They were psyched, and we'll put up some pics soon. We went through all our stuff and then had breakfast, and then back to toys!

We went to Omi and Opa's at 1:30pm or so, and Peter, Karin, Derek, and Tyler were there too, so all the cousins had a good time, as did the aunts and uncles! More great eats, and we went home stuffed again. We watched Star Wars 2 with the kids, and Uncle Alex came over too - a nice way to end the day. (I got Star Wars 1-3 for my birthday, and got 4-6 for Christmas. So we're watching all of them in the order 1-6 to keep the story line straight. Emily seems pretty into it, John likes the light saber battles, but the other stuff seems to bore him. Alex and I are into it - as it's the first time we've seen it in this order, in close proximity of each episode too - really allows you to see what's happening with the senate, etc. geeky, yeah....)

Oh, felt great, and REALLY GREAT TO BE HOME ON CHRISTMAS!
Our hearts go out to all those going through illness, etc that can't be home on Christmas.

Hey dude, Merry Christmas! My family was also lucky this year. Dad was misdiagnosed with phneumonia in two separate hospitals. After the 4th day in the second hospital and no positve results I had him moved to Deborah Heart and Lung where my girlfriend happens to work as an Intervention nurse. Long story short we almost lost him a week before Christmas but went through a successful open heart mitral valve replacement. All kinds of complications: irregular heart beats, something spotted on his lung MRI, additional fluid, needed a subsequent pacemaker etc. The good news is that he is recovering well and actually made it home for Christmas dinner.

Much joy to you and your family this very special holiday season.

JOB - HEY! Wow, what a roller coaster!! I'm THRILLED it worked out the way it did - wow, home for Christmas dinner, that's awesome!! My Dad had a valve replacment last year! Was your Dad's mechanical or bovine or...? Glad you finally got a good diagnosis and they took care of things. The right hospital really matters, eh? Thoughts and prayers for your dad (and family of course!).

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your Family - all the best! Permalink 01/03/06 @ 16:47 Comment from: Bob [Visitor] John,

Dad went with the mechanical valve. He was told that the bovine valve may not last the rest of his life, so he didn't want to take a chance on another surgery. He's recovering well, but milking it just a little.

Thanks for the kind words and wishes.

UPDATE: The French Riviera hotel was hosting a temporary jewelry exhibit of the prestigious Leviev diamond house over the summer.

cartier PARIS — A staggering $136 million worth of diamonds and other jewels were stolen Sunday from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, in one of Europe's biggest jewelry heists in recent years, French authorities said. One expert noted the crime follows recent jail escapes by members of the notorious "Pink Panther" jewel thief gang.

A police spokesman said the theft took place around noon, but he could not confirm local media reports that the robber was a single gunman who stuffed a suitcase with the gems before making a swift exit. The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.

The luxury Carlton hotel is situated on the exclusive Promenade de la Croisette that stretches a mile and a half along the French Riviera, and is thronged by the rich and famous throughout the year. The hotel's position provides not only a beautiful view of the sea but also an easy getaway for potential jewel thieves along the long stretch of road.

The Carlton also was robbed in a smash-and-grab by three armed men that stormed the jewelry store there in 1994 and made off with $46 million worth of gems. That held the record as Europe's largest jewelry heist until 2003 when the Belgian diamond exchange in Antwerp was seized.

"It's a huge theft. Anytime you talk about a heist with many millions of dollars it turns heads and feeds the imagination," said Jonathan Sazonoff , U.S. editor for the Museum Security Network website and an authority on high-value crime.

He said the likelihood of recovering the stolen diamonds and jewels is slim, because thieves can easily sell them on. "The fear is, if you're dealing with high quality minerals, it's hard to get them back," Sazonoff said. "They can be broken up and so they can be easily smuggled and sold."

The valuable gems were supposed to be on public display until the end of August. It was not immediately clear how many pieces were stolen.

Several police officers were placed in front of the Carlton exhibition room -- near a Cartier diamond boutique -- to prevent the dozens of journalists and photographers from getting a look in at the scene of the crime. Hotel officials would not comment, and attempts to reach Leviev or his company were not immediately successful.

Europe has been struck by several brazen jewelry thefts in recent years, some of which have involved tens of millions of dollars in treasure. On Feb. 18 in Belgium, some $50 million worth of diamonds were stolen.

STORY: Cannes Rocked by Another High-Profile Jewelry Heist

In that heist, the stones from the global diamond center of Antwerp had been loaded on a plane headed to Zurich when robbers dressed in dark police clothing and hoods drove through a hole they'd cut in the Brussels Airport fence in two black cars with blue police lights flashing. They drove onto the tarmac, approached the plane, brandished machine guns, offloaded the diamonds, then left in an operation that took barely five minutes.

Authorities have since detained dozens of people and recovered much of the stolen treasure in that operation.

Five years ago, in December 2008, armed robbers wearing women's wigs and clothing made off with diamond rings, gem-studded bracelets and other jewelry said then to be worth $108 million from a Harry Winston boutique in Paris.

As Christmas shoppers strolled outside, the gunmen forced store employees to strip rings, necklaces and earrings from window displays and pull more out of safes -- a brazen robbery that took place in the presence of security guards and security cameras in one of Paris' toniest shopping locales.

Also in 2008 -- in February of that year -- in a scene reminiscent of the movie The Italian Job , masked thieves drilled a tunnel into a Damiani jewelry company showroom in Milan, Italy. They tied up the staff with plastic cable and sticky tape, then made off with gold, diamonds and rubies worth some $20 million. The robbers had been digging for several weeks from a building under construction next door.

Cannes appears to be the favorite target this year -- in May it was struck by two other highly publicized jewelry heists during the Cannes Film Festival.

In the first theft, robbers stole about $1 million worth of jewels after ripping a safe from the wall of a hotel room. The jewelry was taken from the Novotel room of an employee of Chopard, the Swiss-based watch and jewelry maker that has loaned bling to A-list stars walking the red carpet at the film festival.

In the second, thieves outsmarted 80 security guards in an exclusive hotel and grabbed a De Grisogono necklace that creators say is worth $2.6 million (2 million euros).

Sazonoff said it's normal for robbers to gravitate to a place like Cannes, whose glimmering harbor and glamorous film festival attract the world's rich and famous. "Why do thieves target Cannes? It's simple ... On the Cote d'Azur, it's where the monied people flow," he said.

Sazonoff also said police would likely probe whether Sunday's heist is linked to recent jail escapes by alleged members of the Pink Panther jewel thief gang.

On Thursday, a member of the gang escaped prison after accomplices rammed a gate and overpowered guards with bursts from their AK-47s, police said. Milan Poparic fled with fellow inmate Adrian Albrecht from the Orbe prison in the western Swiss state of Vaud.

Police say the Pink Panthers network's members are prime suspects in a series of daring thefts. According to Interpol, the group has targeted luxury watch and jewelry stores in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States, netting more than £ 330 million euros (£285m) since 1999.

Poparic is the third member of the Pink Panthers to escape from a Swiss prison in as many months, according to Vaud police.

"The brazen drama of it is their style... The possibility of the reemergence of the Pink Panther gang is very troubling and taken seriously by law enforcement worldwide," Sazonoff said. "The theft of high value diamonds is exactly what they do, so it's not a great leap to assume they are on the warpath again. They are a crime wave waiting to happen."

Paula Deen’s Discrimination Lawsuit Dismissed
Legal Woes by Tina Nguyen
5:33 pm, August 23rd

tiffany

tiffany The long national food nightmare of the Summer of Racism 2013 is over: a judge dismissed the discrimination lawsuit filed against Paula Deen and her family, which had nearly destroyed the prominent celebrity chef’s career. (Good job, Friday news dump.)

tiffany A dismissal order was posted by Savannah news site WTOC , noting that “both parties have mutually agreed to dismiss the case and a settlement agreement has been filed with the court.” Once a judge signs the order, the entire sordid legal deal — which cast Deen in a negative light after a deposition revealed that she commonly used racist language — will be completely done with, legally speaking.

tiffany And we are so happy to hear that. Honestly, why didn’t Deen settle with Lisa T. Jackson to begin with? There were so many instances where Deen could have just given Jackson a massive chunk of money to drop the lawsuit (and a ton of people agree with us ), but instead she just had to stick it out and make a bunch of ridiculous videos where she tried to explain and justify her bizarre actions (not just her racism, but her poor PR handling of the entire scandal .) Paula Deen has no one to blame for blowing her own scandal out of proportion but herself (to the point that it’s now a Law & Order: SVU episode .)

tiffany By doing so, she simply fed us, the rabid internet beast, until even we got sick of writing about it. It is done. We are finished. We are going to drink some Johnnie Walker Black and close this chapter of our lives forever. Please, no one leak a photo of Deen wearing a Klan outfit to any news outlet.

tiffany (Unless it’s us. Send all non-Photoshopped, Klan-regalia’d Deen photos to our Tips section.)

Ohio Ranked 3rd in the Nation for "Very Low Food Security"
September 4, 2013 - 4:30pm by Julie Kent

tiffany Newly released data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service showed the continued prevalence of food insecurity in Ohio, especially when compared to food security nationally.

cheap tiffany & co jewelry Between 2010 and 2012 nationally, on average 14.7 percent of American households were food insecure at least some time during the year. This means that their food intake was reduced and eating patterns disrupted due to a lack of money and other resources for food. In Ohio during the same time period, 16.1 percent of households were food insecure, including 7.1 percent who experienced "very low" food security.

sell tiffany and co jewelry Low food security has risen in Ohio from 2000 to 2012 by 6.3 percent, which is the third largest increase for any state during that time period and ranks Ohio 10th in the nation.

tiffany jewelry Ohio's very low food security rate of 7.1 percent is also above the national average of 5.6 percent, and ties the state for 3rd in the country.

tiffany rings Nationally, 59 percent of all food insecure households participated in one or more of the three largest federal nutrition programs SNAP, WIC, and the National School Lunch Program, in the month prior to the survey.

tiffany silver jewelry Nationally, the typically food-secure household spent 26 percent more for food than the typical food-insecure household of the same size and composition, including food purchased with SNAP benefits (formerly called food stamps).

According to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, in June 2013, 15.73 percent of the state's population (or 1,815,343 residents) relied on SNAP benefits to supplement their food buying resources and received on average $132 monthly. Many of these households, however, still struggled to secure sufficient amounts of food.

Luxury Resellers Are Giving Fashion a Second Life
The burgeoning market for 'pre-loved' goods
By Robert Klara
September 2, 2013, 10:15 PM EDT
Advertising & Branding
Photo: Karl J. Kaul/ Wonderful Machine chanel
Jaclyn Shanfeld became a fashion entrepreneur by accident. After snapping off a heel while rushing to a bar mitzvah in Beverly Hills, she hobbled into the local Fred Segal boutique and panic-bought a pair of Yves Saint Laurents—that turned out to be too small. After a few hours of podiatric torture, Shanfeld slumped in a chair to ponder her fate: She’d just dropped $900 for designer shoes that didn’t fit. Return them? Sorry, Segal didn’t take shoe returns. What about dropping them in a consignment shop? “They’d sell them for $398 and take a 50 percent commission,” Shanfeld scoffs, “which would have left me enough money to buy lunch. It was a fiasco.” chanel aaa replica
It was also the birth of Shop-Hers.com , a peer-to-peer resale site that deals exclusively in luxury apparel—gently used, like Shanfeld’s YSL heels. Women join by submitting their sizes and measurements, then a custom algorithm matches buyers up with similarly sized females with items to sell. And while big-city consignment shops take anything from 50-75 percent of a sale price, Shanfeld assesses only 18 percent. Business, she says, is booming. “We’ve been up for seven months and we’re growing faster than I ever imagined—almost 50 percent a month,” she says. discount chanel handbags
Shop-Hers.com isn’t alone. It’s one of a growing number of luxury resale platforms to appear online of late. Their names— Fashionphile , Covetique , LuxuryExchange —are redolent of runway desires. But while the merch might be used, this is not your mother’s consignment shop. The newest clique of luxury resellers offers choice goods, personalized service, reasonable fees and deep discounts, like the Dolce & Gabbana cocktail dress that Shop-Hers.com recently listed for $250. chanel handbags replica
At SnobSwap.com , another newcomer consigner, the used Burberry bags are 70 percent off retail, and buyers can pay with cash, barter or a combination of both. “It gives people more flexibility,” says CEO Elise Whang, who started the site last April when law school debts cut into her shopping but her career still mandated that she dress well. With SnobSwap’s budget-friendly setup, “you can get your fashion fix, monetize your own wardrobe and swap with like-minded people,” Whang says. chanel outlet store
Threadflip.com , yet another newcomer to the segment, also boasts jaw-dropping discounts. Say, a Coach python skin belt for just $57, shipping included. Not unlike Shanfeld, Threadflip founder and CEO Manik Singh started the site after his wife, trying to dispose of a pair of designer boots she never wore, didn’t want to deal with the aggravations of traditional consignment. Threadflip takes a modest 20 percent commission on the goods that users post themselves, but it also offers its White Glove service for women who have lots of items to sell but don’t have time to do it. “We’ll send you a box for your item, manage the whole sale and send you a check,” Singh says. Even with the steeper 40 percent commission, “we’re seeing lots of activity.” chanel outlet store
Indeed, the new generation of luxury resellers has discovered that with a few full-service touches, they can even draw customers who have the money to shop on New York’s Madison Avenue. Part of it is semantics: Much like Mercedes successfully turned “used” cars into “certified, pre-owned” ones in the early 1990s, online designer resellers shun terms like “used” and “secondhand” in favor of “vintage and collectible” and even “pre-loved.”
But the greater value they add is selectivity and customer service. For example, luxury-resale pioneer Portero.com , founded in 2004, showcases only coveted goods like Gucci furs and diamond-studded Rolex watches. It also offers a personal-shopping service, just like a high-end department store. “If you’re looking for a Fendi or Chanel bag from a certain year, we’ll help you find it,” says operations director Alexis Clarbour. And business? “It’s phenomenal,” she says. “We’re having our best year yet.” (Privately held Portero, like most of these sites, declined to release financial results.) Also occupying luxury resale’s high ground is Vaunte.com , which differentiates itself by selling the closets of prominent female executives, all of whom are profiled on the site. It means that every Louboutin heel, every Hermès scarf has a provenance that enhances its desirability. Vaunte has sold over $1 million worth of goods since its launch in November, according to CEO Leah Park. “This,” she says, “is the last frontier of fashion.”
It may well be. While there are no statistics specifically for luxury resellers online, traditional brick-and-mortar consigners saw their business grow by 12.7 percent in 2009, the latest figure available from the National Association of Resale Professionals. “Every time the economy slows down, it’s an opportunity for this business,” says the trade group’s executive director Adele Meyer. “And once people start shopping resale doesn’t mean they stop once the economy improves.” Designer resellers are also expanding with venture capital behind them, like the $14 million that TheRealReal.com raised in April. “This is a niche category,” observes Jason B. Cohen, evp of luxury brand consultancy The O Group. “Enterprising entrepreneurs have discovered some white space, and are finding ways to make something really terrific.”
Luxury apparel consignment itself is nothing new. Encore, a resale shop in New York where Jacqueline Onassis dumped her unwanted Dior and Chanel, opened in 1954. So why are fashionistas suddenly flocking to its e-tailing equivalent? Observers point to several reasons, starting with a lingering recessionary hangover. While number crunchers at the Fed might tell us that the American economy has recovered, it doesn’t mean that consumers are confident enough to pull a shopping spree at Gucci.
“When I walk up and down Rodeo Drive, people are not in the stores,” Shop-Hers’ Shanfeld says. “Women don’t have the kind of money they had in the past to buy $3,000 handbags. But we still have the desire to be fashionable and to have luxury goods.”
Whang agrees. “There’s been a change in mind-set,” says the SnobSwap founder. “Consignment shopping used to have a stigma to it, but as the younger generation—who have learned from the recession—move into the workforce, they’re more open-minded about recycling and reusing, and fitting that into their lifestyles.”

Why does this watch cost $1.3 million? It's complicated      Text Size       Published: Friday, 13 Sep 2013 | 11:33 AM ET

This watch is so valuable it needs its own bodyguard

CNBC's Robert Frank goes inside the vault at Patek Philippe headquarters in New York City to take a look at the one of the world's most expensive timepieces.

watches In medicine, business and relationships, complications are a best avoided. But in watches, complications are better than jewels.

replica watches As if to prove the point, Patek Philippe, the storied 174-year-old watch-maker, is releasing its most complicated watch ever. And that's saying something, since Patek is considered the master of fine watch complications.

copy watches The watch is called the Reference 6002 Sky Moon Tourbillon. It's got 12 complications—making it a "Grand Complication," including a tourbillon, minute repeater, sky chart and perpetual calendar. The sky chart on the back of the watch shows the evening sky in whatever region you happen to be in, while the moon-phase display shows you whether the moon that night is a crescent or full.

swiss Mechanical movement replica watches The price for all those complications: $1.3 million. But money alone won't get you the watch.

The Reference 6002 is what Patek calls "an application piece," meaning you have to apply and prove that you have a track record with Patek and that you appreciated the artisanship of fine watches.

"Even if you offered $6 million for the watch, we wouldn't sell it to you unless you're approved," said Larry Pettinelli, president of Patek North America.

Patek won't say how many of the 6002 it will make, but Pettinelli said "it's very few."

Fort Leavenworth - Fort Leavenworth, KS

Where can academia and the Department of Defense collaborate in an environment of diminished resources to smartly look at irregular warfare issues? The answer may lie in a soon-to-be-signed memorandum of agreement between the U.S. Army Irregular Warfare Center at Fort Leavenworth and the University of Kansas. Under the agreement, three fellows who are doctoral candidates at KU will conduct research and write scholarly papers that focus on issues important to the Defense Intelligence Agency. Two of the fellows are working on their doctorates in law and one is pursuing that higher degree in political science. David Kasten, chief of interagency coordination with the IWC, said that the agency reached out to collaborate with KU, a first-tier research institution. “We are being bold, we are being audacious and we are being provocative with how we approach these topics because we really want people thinking about irregular warfare in ways they haven’t before,” he said. “We hope to get groundbreaking thought pieces.” The IWC is the advocate for conventional forces regarding all irregular warfare-related issues, which includes areas such as cyber and economic warfare, Kasten said. “We like to think of ourselves as thought leaders with irregular warfare-related issues, which is why this fellowship program is so important to us,” he said. Under the program, fellows from the United States, South Korea and Nigeria will receive a stipend and produce unclassified scholarly works with the intent to publish them in journals like Military Review or Joint Forces Quarterly, or completely outside the Department of Defense to agencies such as the Center for the National Interest, a think tank in Washington, D.C. “The beauty of that is you’re reaching a broader audience rather than the people who already understand it,” Kasten said. In general, the American and South Korean will research Asia, and the Nigerian will look at Africa, an important topic because the Army has regionally aligned the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan., to Africa, Kasten said. The fellow from Africa’s work is going to directly and indirectly inform the regionally aligned force at Fort Riley, he said. He noted that the work from the two fellows looking at Asia will inform the Army and also the regular Department of Defense about why is it important to look at Asia from an academic standpoint. The benefit to the fellows is that their research topics are in line with what they’re studying and that their works will move them toward their academic goals, Kasten said, adding that the three selected were from a highly qualified pool of 12 candidates. The fellowship program benefits the DoD, KU, Fort Leavenworth, the Combined Arms Center, the Mission Command Center of Excellence and the Army’s Irregular Warfare Center, Kasten said. Mike Denning, director of Graduate Military Programs at KU, said the institution also welcomes the collaboration with the IWC. His department has had previous educational partnerships with Fort Leavenworth since 2004, but not with the IWC, he said. “From our standpoint, what we want to do is to continue to build a strong relationship between the University of Kansas and the Irregular Warfare Center as well as the CAC at large,” Denning said. “You’re not going to get this type of quality researchers in a lot of places, so to be able to provide the Army with this is a unique opportunity for both them and us.” For Kasten’s part, he hopes the program will spur other top research institutions throughout the nation near military installations to mimic Fort Leavenworth, known as the intellectual center of the Army. “How do we maintain relevancy?” Kasten asked rhetorically. “This is one of the ways in which we’re trying to show it.”

E 'morreu Maria Preá'...

Atenção, petistas: em vídeo, Dias Toffoli diz exatamente quantos votos Michel Temer recebeu
Implicante
